FRM Course Guide 2026: Syllabus, Fees, Jobs and more

FRM Course Guide 2026: Syllabus, Fees, Jobs and more

Risk management jobs are no longer a niche. Indian banks, global GCCs, fintechs, and Big 4 consulting firms have been hiring risk professionals steadily through 2025 and into 2026. A big reason is tighter regulatory timelines from the RBI and SEBI, plus Basel IV deadlines pushing financial institutions to build proper risk teams. The FRM from GARP is the qualification most of these employers check for.

This guide covers what the FRM course actually involves in 2026, what it costs, how long preparation takes, and what the job market looks like once you clear it.

FRM Exam Structure

The FRM has two parts. Part 1 has 100 multiple-choice questions in four hours. Part 2 has 80 questions in four hours. Both are computer-based and held three times a year: May, August, and November. The August and November 2026 windows are currently open for registration on GARP’s website.

FRM Part 1 subject areas:

Topic Weightage
Foundations of Risk Management 20%
Quantitative Analysis 20%
Financial Markets and Products 30%
Valuation and Risk Models 30%

Part 2 covers market risk, credit risk, operational risk, liquidity risk, investment risk, and current issues in financial risk management.

2026 FRM Syllabus Updates

The Part 1 syllabus of FRM stays the same as last year. All 62 chapters carry forward into 2026. The only change sits in Quantitative Analysis, where two learning outcomes have been updated. Earlier, these tested whether you could describe a concept. Now they check whether you can actually work through a calculation.

FRM Part 2 has changed more significantly. Twelve new chapters have been added and nine removed. Investment Risk now includes private market investing, hedge fund risk management, and early warning signs in alternative assets. The Current Issues section has been rewritten to cover AI in risk models, model validation, and systemic risk topics. Candidates using 2024 Part 2 materials should switch to the 2026 curriculum before sitting the exam.

FRM Course Fees

No educational background is required to register for the FRM course. The one-time enrollment fee of USD 400 applies only at Part 1 registration and is not charged again for Part 2.

Registration Type Exam Fee Per Part
Early USD 600
Standard USD 800
Late USD 1,000

Early registration across both parts saves USD 400 in total. Wire payments carry an extra USD 50 processing charge per transaction, so paying by card is the simpler option.

Preparation Time

GARP’s own data puts average study time at 240 hours per part. Most candidates end up spending 250 to 300 hours on Part 1 and closer to 300 to 350 hours on Part 2.

Weekly Hours Time Required
8 to 10 hours 6 to 7 months
12 to 15 hours 4 to 5 months
15 to 20 hours 3 to 4 months

For the November 2026 window, starting around mid-June works for most working professionals. Mock exams matter more than most candidates expect. Starting timed practice papers six to eight weeks before exam day and completing at least four to six full-length tests makes a real difference in the final result. Financial Markets and Products combined with Valuation and Risk Models carry 60 per cent of the Part 1 weight, so those two areas deserve the most time.

Salaries and Jobs in 2026 after FRM Course

In India, FRM-certified professionals earn 20 to 40 per cent more than colleagues with general finance degrees. The country also sits among the top three globally for FRM exam registrations, a number that points to employer demand more than anything else.

Salaries in India by experience:

Level Annual Salary
Entry Level Rs 8 to Rs 12 LPA
Mid-Career Rs 15 to Rs 22 LPA
Senior Level Rs 25 to Rs 30 LPA
Model Risk Lead at GCCs Rs 40 to Rs 65 LPA
Chief Risk Officer Rs 50 LPA to Rs 1 Crore+

Global ranges:

Country Annual Range
United States USD 75,000 to USD 250,000+
United Kingdom GBP 50,000 to GBP 90,000
Singapore SGD 80,000 to SGD 1,50,000
UAE AED 1,80,000 to AED 3,50,000

Roles hiring FRM holders across Indian and global markets include Market Risk Analyst, Credit Risk Manager, Model Risk Validator, Operational Risk Officer, and Risk Consultant roles at firms like KPMG, Deloitte, EY, Goldman Sachs, and HSBC. GCC offices in Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Gurgaon are among the most active hiring locations right now.

Who It Makes Sense For

The FRM works for two types of people. Professionals already in banking or financial services who want a recognised credential behind their name. And finance graduates who want to move into risk management faster rather than waiting for years of job exposure.

GARP allows up to four years after clearing Part 1 to sit for Part 2. The actual FRM designation is issued only after both parts are cleared and two years of full-time risk management work experience is submitted, completed within ten years of passing Part 2.

If you already have relevant experience, you could receive your certification within one to one and a half years of starting the FRM course.

For candidates who want structured preparation, Zell Education offers an FRM course built around working professional schedules, with focused exam support for both parts. See more
